Starring Alexis Bledel, Joseph Fiennes, Elisabeth Moss and Samira Wiley, The Handmaid's Tale's dystopian narrative sets itself in the fictional Republic of Gilead, an authoritarian theocracy which comes to power in the United States of America. The maid's report came at the right moment. The series version of Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name was published in April 2017, during the first few months of Donald Trump's presidency, and put his finger in the wounds of the time. A fascist America, in which women are degraded to weaving machines, caused many people real fears: men with power, who dominate women's bodies. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values'. As one of the few remaining fertile women, June (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in Commander Fred’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. And that was before the case of Weinstein was publicized and sexual harassment debated in Hollywood. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.
